Ovenden Allworks were selected following a competitive tender process to be the civils contractor for the installation of Pre-cast concrete Culvert units under the existing Tile Lodge Road and Burleigh Farm access road to provide a sand conveyor link between the Existing Charing Quarry and the Burleigh Farm extension site.
Road closure and diversions had to be agreed with KCC beforehand as this a school bus route , it was agreed the works would be carried out during the school, summer holidays.
The precast concrete culverts, weighing 12t each, had to be delivered to the old quarry to avoid articulated lorries from using the single lane roads, and transported over a mile across the reinstated quarry to the works area.
The culvert laying commenced on the centreline of the road so could progress in 2 directions to enable us to open the road again to enable traffic to flow again as the diversion was more than 2 miles cutting the village in half.
The Culverts under the road had extensive waterproofing to extend the life of the culverts to avoid having to have future road closures.
Gabions baskets filled with rock were used to support the steep sided excavation.
On completion of the civils works Brett Aggregates installed a conveyor to transport sand from the new quarry to the processing plant ensuring future local supplies for the building industry.
