Ovenden Allworks recently accomplished the largest flood defence breach in England on behalf of DP World London Gateway.

The project involved creating a new intertidal mudflat habitat as environmental compensation for the construction of London Gateway Port. The main contractor, McLaughlin and Harvey, built a 2km flood protection bund, and Ovenden Allworks carried out the 700m breach in the River Thames flood defences.

The Job

The Job

The process included removing the original wavewall units, driving a sheet pile cut-off wall, and crushing the pre-cast concrete units for road construction. The 50,000 m3 clay bund at the core was excavated and relocated to borrow pits. The bund was gradually lowered leading up to a neap tide, culminating in the removal of the central core in one tidal cycle. Roundheads were constructed at each end of the breach using imported rock armour stone.
